New Place, New Ham Shack
It’s been over a month and a half since I moved into the new place, and I don’t have anything setup for my shack yet, and I have been going through some withdrawal. So I decided that it’s time to get things rolling with the shack. So I’m going document my shack building here, and hope some of you offer up some ideas and suggestions along the way. And money is tight, so I need...
East Greenbush Hamfest 2011 – A Few Pictures
This past Saturday, May 14th, 2011, was the East Greenbush Amateur Radio Club‘s hamfest. And being a connoisseur of ham fests. I had to go. So I packed the camera, and the Padawan and I went off down the road, while the YL stayed home. And for some odd reason, she had a big grin on her face as I drove away. And I her her say something about finally getting some work done. Hmm. Wonder what she...

After being away for the weekend for my daughter’s birthday, and barely looking at my twitter or my computer, I woke up to some nice news today. Looking for Ham Radio Ideas for Kids
We all know that teaching kids early is the way to effect change. Be it a good change or a bad change is the motive of the person doing the teaching. But showing kids about ham radio has helped to improve interest in science and math. And since my oldest daughter was born, I have always wanted to participate in an event that involves school kids. It could be something like Kid’s Day or working...
Can’t Think of a Ham Radio Story to Write
Well, it had to happen. Here I sit, with no idea for a story to post. Nothing really jumping out at me from Twitter or my Google Alerts. So what do I talk about that is Ham Radio centric? Hmm, that’s actually a good idea! What do YOU talk about when someone asks you about Amateur Radio?

Amateur Radio PSAs Give Ham Radio Media Exposure
As a professional broadcaster for the last 20 years, I can say for certain that any media exposure will get people’s attention. The trick is getting people interested in that particular story to generate response. A simple story blurb about a club setting up for field day is good, but a full story on how this helps the community at large as well as other facets of the hobby is great! If people...
Dayton Club Announces Fundraising Challenge for AMSAT
Fresh off the Southgate Amateur Radio Club’s website, and which can also be read on AMSAT’s website is a news piece that the Dayton Amateur Radio Association has announced a fundraising challenge for AMSAT, for donations up to $5,000 for 2011. The donations will be on a 1:3 match ratio. What this breaks down to is for every $3 that is raised, the Dayton Amateur Radio Association will ...
Amateur Radio is Still Growing. Take THAT 21st Century!
When I tell someone that I am an Amateur Radio operator, the number one response is “Really? There are people that still do that?” Then I explain to them yes, there are. I am proof. Sometime ago, there was a blog, or maybe two, that listed Ham radio as something that is going the way of the Dodo bird, or VHS tapes. But we’re growing in numbers. And I’ve been doing my part to...
Watch Hamvention Live Online
In 2 weeks, the “Woodstock” of Amateur Radio, Hamvention, will take place in Dayton, Ohio. For years I have wanted to go, but timing always seemed off, so I have never been able to go. But now, thought the magic of the interwebs, I can! The W5KUB.com website will be live streaming the Hamvention including the 550 mile drive there on Wednesday, May 18th, and setup of their shelter on Thursday...
If You Could Recruit a Celeb to be a Ham, Who Would It Be?
Ham Radio has been used in TV and movies as a plot device for a while now. And some real life radio, TV and movie stars enjoy the hobby as much as we do! But if you had the opportunity to recruit a celebrity to be a ham radio operator, who would it be and why? Here’s my top 3 list..

Amateur Radio Operators Worry About HR 607
Back on February 10th, 2011, Rep. Peter King (R-NY) introduced House Resolution 607, the “Broadband for First Responders Act of 2011″.
